Territorial-administrative structures and their reforms in European countries

The book presents spatial aspect of the operation of public administration in European countries and changes in territorial-administrative systems at regional and local levels. The analysis covers the properties of administrative units and their role in the political, economic and social lives of modern states. Similarities and differences in administrative divisions under various state, legal, economic, and cultural systems are presented. The thesis offers an identification of main reasons for territorial changes, a description of the criteria and methods employed in reforming administrative divisions, and an evaluation of the effects of the reforms in terms of rationalisation of administrative operations, spatial-functional systems, and social consequences. New forms of controlling administrative space are presented, like inter-territorial and transborder co-operation. The work closes with a set of universal principles of moulding territorial structures of public administration.
